Jan Bernstein Chargin has lived in Gilroy since 2001. She was born and raised in New York City and moved to California after her graduation from Cornell University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Economics. Her early career included working as a manufacturing supervisor at Frito-Lay, several years as an independent artist, gigs in catering, retail, and caregiving, as well as a number of years in nonprofits.
She recently retired after serving twenty years as the Director of Public Information at Gavilan College. Along the way, she completed a Master's Degree in Public Policy at the California State University at Monterey Bay Panetta Institute and co-founded two nonprofit organizations dedicated to addressing homelessness, the Gilroy Compassion Center and PitStop Outreach.
She currently serves on the Board of Directors of PitStop Outreach and at Destination: Home and on the Santa Clara County Continuum of Care Collaborative Board. In 2022 she unsuccessfully ran for election to the Gilroy City Council. Jan and her husband Tom are the parents of three children, now adults.
