He was also the Head Strength Coach at 5 Stones Fight Club, a local MMA and Grappling Gym. Mitch is also the co-author of Bull: A Book for Fathers & Sons. In this episode Mitch teaches me about the psychology of fitness and how to motivate yourself to make big changes in your health. Here’s the interview.
What can listeners do to get started with a fitness routine?
Getting started is the hardest part. We love consistency and the unknown can be scary. Find something that can drive you to get to the gym. Find out what drives you, do you want to be able to be more active with your children? Take the crawl, walk run approach. Don’t be afraid to ask others in the gym for advice. Find a personal trainer to support your journey and hold yourself accountable
What advice can you offer for overcoming self-doubt?
Ask yourself- what goal can you set that is bigger than you?
Ask yourself- what is it that is going to push me through the pain
Be willing to sacrifice for success
What’s a failure he experienced and how he got through it?
Drinking in high school and getting caught and getting kicked off the soccer team. Got a tough lesson from the school’s track coach who didn’t let him feel sorry for himself. This taught him to never make excuses and take responsibly for his own actions.
Ask yourself: Why are you putting excuses in front of potential success? Really think about this and the goals you want to accomplish, remind yourself of this every day.
What drives him to keep going and push hard?
Having a chip on his shoulder, feeling like he needs to prove himself. Breaking his own records and pushing boundaries
What are 3 Life Lessons that Mitch has learned?
Embrace the Suck; be willing to go through the pain, to do the hard work and things you don’t necessarily want to because you know there will be a reward on the other side. Work through the struggle and the hardship
There Is always someone who is going to work harder than you, push yourself, beat your own records
Die first, then Quit! Don’t give up. Keep getting back up no matter how many times you fail
How does he define success?
Doing what others have told him what others have told him he could not. Going over the edge. His father always told him that no man is going to accomplish success in his comfort zone
What does it take to push him over the edge?
Having people in his life that are a lot better than him at what he is trying to do. Learning lessons from others in his life; Coaches especially as well as his father
Take a break from time to time so you can come back at it that much stronger
“99% of our life is not worth giving a shit but it’s that 1% that is! But too often do we get caught up in that 99%, don’t worry about if what you are doing is popular, if people are going to like it or you’re going to look cool. Focus on the 1%; family, relationships, business and self-improvement.
Take the initiative to make a change in your life today!
Last words of wisdom- never assume that your life is that bad that you can’t make a change, don’t be a cope out and let excuses gyp you of your success.
