Matthew 23 - Pharisaism Exposed23 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, 2 saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses; 3 therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them. - Pharisaism Exposedo Jesus is going to expose False Religious Leaders who don’t do what they preach- Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His discipleso Jesus wants unbelievers and believers to know this- The scribes the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moseso In other words, they appointed themselveso They were not appointed by Godo The chair of Moses is a reference to the law given by God to Moses to give to the people- Therefore I tell you do and observeo Its good to know the law if you do it- But do not do according to their deedso Don’t follow their example because they say things and do not do themo This is called lying (rules for thee but not for me)o God rules apply to everyone (especially religious leaders)4 They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger. 5 But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. 6 They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.- They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulderso They are loading up men with ruleso But they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a fingero They make no effort to keep these rules or laws- But they do all their deeds to be noticed by meno Notice their motivationo To be noticed or seen (acting religious not acting Godly)- They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels and garmentso Man, they look the parto All dressed up to look holier than thou- They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogueso They want special seating and special treatmento The want to appear important and Holier than others (totally fakes)- And respectful greetings in the market placeso People come up to them and pay their respectso It like attention for a movie star- And being called Rabbi by meno Rabbi means teachero They want people to look up to them for answerso As if they are closer to God or wiser (yet not)Intro to Outbless Weekly Thanks for listening to Outbless.com
