Matthew 18 - Rank in the Kingdom18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”- The title of Matthew 18 his rank in the Kingdomo this is a question of power and position in heaven not on earth- at that timeo after Jesus had Peter catch a fish and pay the double taxo what are the odds that peter could catch one fish and it would have the tax money sufficient to pay the tax in it mouth (from all the millions fish)- the disciples came to Jesuso notice the disciples are the ones asking this questiono does this seem appropriate?- Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?o Why did they want to knowo What difference does it makeo Is this Christian believers caught up in pride? 2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.- Jesus answered the question by using a child to illustrate- Unless you are converted and become like childreno Children simply trust their Dad without question- You will not enter the kingdom of heaveno It takes child like faith to enter heaveno You must simply believe your heavenly father to get in- Whoever then humbles himself as this childo He is the greatest in the kingdom of heaveno A obedient child comes when called, sits, listens, accepts his fathers wordso When you conduct yourself like this you become great in heaven§ Faith, trust, obedience are the key 5 And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.- When you receive a child in Jesus name, you receive Jesus Himself (as unto Him!)- But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble (to confuse, to trip up, to stop believing in or obeying God)o It would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck and be drowned in the sea (because at this would cause death and be done)o Punishment for the perversion of a child away from faith or obedience to Jesus will result in eternal punishmento Note to school teachers this lesson is for you!o Note to parents or authorities – this lesson is for you!o There is a very serious price to pay for misleading children away from Jesus Christ!Stumbling Blocks7 “Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks!
