Listen "Shelach Drashes 6/17/2023"
Episode Synopsis
In the Torah portion of Shelach, we learn about the 12 spies that were sent into the land of Cana’an. We learn about the 10 spies who gave a negative report about the land, and struck fear into the hearts of Israel. We learn how God punished the people of Israel for refusing to trust in him and cross into the land of Israel. We also learn about Yehoshua (Joshua), one of the two spies who brought back a favorable report, and was destined to lead the people into the land of Cana’an 40 years later. All this, from the people of Israel choosing not to trust in God and in turn being cursed to wander for 40 years, to Yehoshua, the one who would ultimately lead Israel into the promised land, All this points towards the Messiah. Parshat Shelach, meaning "Send," takes us on a captivating journey as Moshe sends twelve spies to explore the land of Canaan. Their report about the bountiful land and its challenges sets the stage for important lessons and insights. Here is a brief summary of the Parshah:
- The spies return from Canaan with reports of a lush and fruitful land, but ten of them express fear and doubt, causing unrest among the Israelites. Caleb and Joshua, on the other hand, maintain faith in G‑d's promise of conquering the land.
- The people's lack of trust in G‑d leads to a decree that delays Israel's entry into the land for forty years, during which the rebellious generation will pass away in the desert.
- A group of remorseful Jews attempt to enter the land prematurely but are met with defeat by the Amalekites and Canaanites.
- The Parshah also includes various commandments, such as consecrating a portion of dough (challah) when making bread, observing the Shabbat, and wearing fringes (tzitzit) on garments as a reminder of the divine commandments.
