Listen "#97 | Boldly Walk into God's Presence: The Day of Atonement Part 4"

Episode Synopsis

In this episode we continue exploring how the writer of Hebrews applies the Day of Atonement to the work of Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and ascension. In the Day of Atonement, the High Priest entered into the Holy of Holies, with the blood from the sacrificial offering of a bull and a goat, to cleanse the Holy of Holies of the impurities caused by the sins of Israel. This was done once a year. What the writer of Hebrews wants us to realize is that built into the Day of Atonement is a remembrance of sins - the sins committed in the previous year since the last Day of Atonement. This remembrance of sins creates a guilty conscience and can be a significant deterrent to us wanting to approach God and enjoying our time together with him.
The writer of Hebrews wants us to know that Jesus has made a new and living way into the Holy of Holies through the flesh - the body - of Christ. In other words, it's not like the Day of Atonement because there is no remembrance of sins. In his resurrected body Christ has entered into the Holy of Holies with his body - flesh and blood - and presented himself to God as one who has allowed the law to be worked into every aspect of his life, becoming fully obedient to the will of God in his body (Hebrews 10:1-18). This pefected obedience in the flesh of Christ is what allows his life - his body, flesh, and blood - to function as a life-giving, cleansing and purifying agent for every person who puts their trust in the sufficiency of his life.
If we truly believe Christ's blood can cleanse our sins, and that this cleansing is continuously taking place through Christ's constant intercession for us, it will radically affect the way we approach God and interact with him. Instead of approaching God with a posture of guilt, shame, and contrition, our posture will be one of freedom, boldness, and confidence in the presence of God. God actually does want to be with us, and he wants to be with us in a way that is life-giving for us. He wants to be in a genuine relationship with us where we are free to be ourselves in his presence and say what is truly on our mind and in our hearts.
