Listen "#67 | Passover and Atonement: Participating with God in His Battle Against Evil"
Episode Synopsis
In our previous episode we looked at the Passover in its Biblical context within Exodus and noticed that through the Passover (along with plagues 4-9) God was making a distinction between Egyptians and Israelites.
In this episode we are going to look at the Passover in its historical religious context and how this can address common questions that surround the events and symbolism of Passover. For example, why does Passover reset their calendars as the beginning of their new years? Why does God ask them to choose a lamb (or goat) for the Passover, and not a bull or a cow? Why does the lamb spend 4 days in their home? Why do they have to kill the lamb at 3 pm in broad daylight? Why do they have to do it on the 14th of the month - a time when the moon would be full and shining? And what does all this have to do with God wanting to make a distinction between Egyptians and Israelites? We address all of these questions and more in this episode.
Key Passages:
Exodus 12:1-7
Genesis 46:32, Exodus 8:26 - working with and sacrificing sheep would be an abomination to the Egyptians, and would lead the Egyptians to stone - kill - Israelites if they heard (much less saw) Israel do such an abomination.
