Listen "#37 | The Blessing of Abraham through His Seed Part 3"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode we discover what Paul understands the blessing of Abraham to be. It may surprise you, but the blessing of Abraham is actually the Spirit of Christ. This can be quite shocking if you have tended to focus more on justification, salvation, redemption and all the other Bible words that describe the benefits of what Christ has done for us. Those are definitely a part of what we receive from Christ, but the blessing God promised to give all the nations of the earth, according to Paul, is the Spirit. Wow, what a different way of looking at it!
In Galatians, the Spirit is said to do a lot of things, but some of the more obvious ones are the working of miracles, crying out Abba Father in our hearts, and the cultivation of is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Essentially, the Spirit of Christ actively leads us into the Fathering of God so that he can develop us into the kind of person God created us to be. The Spirit is the blessing because everything that Christ himself has perfected in himself is shared with us by the Spirit.
The way we get access to the Spirit is by relying on the faithfulness of Christ and being baptized into him. When we enter into Christ, we become Abraham's seed, and therefore become heirs to the promise God made to bless the nations through his seed.
Key Passages
Galatians 3:14-18 - Christ is said to be the seed ("singular) of Abraham, and the sole recipient of the promise made to Abraham.
Galatians 3:26-29 - through faith and baptism, we enter into Christ and become Abraham's seed, thereby qualifying us to receive the promise made to Abraham's seed (singular).
