Listen "#146 | 1 Samuel: The Childhood of Samuel and Jesus Part 5"

Episode Synopsis

In this episode, we go deeper into the Greek word "prokopto" and its implications for the the internal resistance Jesus had to overcome in order to grow and develop. Contrary to the common perception that Jesus had a smooth, easy path, Jesus encountered an internal resistance in his own flesh and humanity to the Father's will, which is vividly portrayed in Luke 22:39-46, where Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane.
This story of Jesus praying in the garden reveals the intense internal struggle Jesus experienced while aligning His will with the Father's, particularly concerning the looming crucifixion. We unpack the dual meaning of "temptation" as a difficult experience akin to a trial or test, as well as being "tempted" to sin.
Jesus' instruction to His disciples to "pray that you do not enter temptation" mirrors His own prayer, asking the Father to let the cup of the cross' "temptation" pass from Him. Jesus exemplified the same instruction He gave His disciples to ask the Father to not lead Him into temptation.
We also contrast Jesus' steadfastness with Peter's failure, illustrating how Peter's experience of failure in temptation serves as a foil to Jesus' success in temptation.
Lastly, we look at how Jesus' internal battle, framed by the Greek word "agony," signifies a contest between Jesus' will and the Father's will, which is fueled by Jesus' strong desire for human flourishing in the face of the death and destruction of the cross. Despite His human aversion to suffering and death, Jesus chose the path of submission to the Father's will, prioritizing the greater good over personal desire.
We conclude by emphasizing the unique accomplishment of Jesus—He did not give up during the struggle but passed through it to the finish line. The good news is that, although Peter failed his test, Jesus provided a way for him to re-enter the race.
