In this episode of ON CITIES, host Carie Penabad  explores the life and work of Cuban-American artist Emilio Sánchez with architectural historian and author Victor Deupi. Known for his bold use of color, striking contrasts of light and shadow, and powerful portrayals of vernacular architecture, Sánchez's art is both a visual and emotional exploration of place. His work offers a unique perspective on mid-century modernism, using architectural representation to search for cultural identity in exile. While deeply personal, his precise depictions of the built environment tap into universal themes, allowing his art to resonate globally.  Victor Deupi is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Miami School of Architecture where he teaches history and theory, design, and representation. He received a Bachelor of Science in architecture from the University of Virginia, a Master of Architecture from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught previously at Fairfield University, the New York Institute of Technology, the  University of Notre Dame, the Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture in London, and has been a "Visiting Critic" at the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech. The principal focus of his research is on the Early Modern  Spanish and Ibero-American world, mid-20th-century Cuba, and contemporary architecture.
