Episode Synopsis

Today we are podcasting from Tucanos Farmington.  It’s our Port-A-Podcast!Tucanos is the place with the two tone little wooden blocks! The primary features of these little wooden blocks are the bold green and red colors, one at each end, that act as signals to a meat server at this Brazilian grill. It is such a great system: Green side up means you are ready for more meat. Red side up, you are taking a break.Like raising your hand, the little red/green signaler communicates effectively without having to keep your hand raised the whole time or feel like you always have to be watching for a server to wave down. This little signaler is a prop.  It’s a facilitator. It reminds us of the flight attendant button above the seat on an airplane. Just push the button and wait. No need for continually scanning the entire cabin for assistance. It is sort of like the little red flag on your mailbox.  You’ve got outgoing mail!Sending and receiving signals are nothing new.The idea that communication is a two-way thing isn’t either. The “talking” part of two-way is obvious, but, often, the listening part is not. Reciprocity is another word for two-way. Many people forget that reciprocity also includes listening.  There is reciprocation in listening. Listening should be a key part of the process not an exception. But in today’s high-tech world, there are plenty of people with things to say than people ready to listen.Genuine listening, however, is the gateway to focused observation. And, to listen & learn is more than simply paying attention, it is as much about understanding people as it is about content. There is an art to skilled listening. The art of skilled listening includes the art of understanding othersIt helps when there is a little red & green prop that signals and facilitates expectations. It also helps to have a good atmosphere, like Tucanos, where you can meet and greet (or meat & great. . .meat and eat) in a formal, yet relaxed venue. The venue is as important as the menu. That is why we enjoy both here at Tucanos Farmington
