Today Stauney introduces us to Artemisia Gentileschi, a baroque painter and a 17th-century feminist who surpassed gender norms to become known as a monumental female artist. She encountered a variety of obstacles, including a harrowing rape and consequent trial of her rapist that reached a level of notoriety for that time that has continued on today. We discuss the era she grew up in, her early talent and education, the rape and trial, her professional success, and her most notorious works of art and the context behind them.
