In Episode 35 of Mindset on Resilience, we are joined by Dr. Max Weinberg, owner and consultant of Belonging LLC, author, and former principal. Now a leadership coach for principals across Chicago, Dr. Weinberg's journey into education was deeply rooted in his experiences as a young person. Witnessing classmates and community members being singled out based on their appearance ignited his passion to become an educator focused on equity.

As an adoptive father to two children of a different race than his, Dr. Weinberg shares his personal experiences of how the world would perceive and interpret them. This personal journey, along with the heartbreaking loss of his sister, instilled in him a drive to advocate for equity, justice, and empathy in both healthcare and education.

Dr. Weinberg discusses the seven core issues adoptees face in the classroom and how educators can support adopted and looked-after children. Through extensive research, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing and validating these children’s diverse identities. He believes belonging goes beyond inclusion, requiring the creation of environments where everyone feels truly seen, heard, and valued.
