In Mark 9:33 we read that while traveling with his disciples Jesus heard them arguing so when they got to where they were going he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?”
But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
What I see implied in Jesus’ words is this:  greatness is measured by self-giving, self-sacrificial love. The more a person gives of himself, the greater the person and the more worthy of honor.
Now consider this: God constantly gives all of Himself away in love –– the Father to the Son, the Son to the Father, the Holy Spirit to the Father and Son and they in turn to the Holy Spirit and then the Godhead to all creation. This is why the greatness of God is incommensurable, that is to say, so great it can’t be compared to anything else. The infinite God infinitely gives Himself away keeping nothing for Himself. And this is why He is worthy of all praise and worship everywhere, at all times, by everyone, and everything.
