He grew up as the only child, and was the son of Dr. Luck's oldest sister, Theresa, and William Banks.  His parents were educators, and his mother taught at several Baltimore schools, including Northern High School from which she retired as a counselor. Terry says that Jerry, Jr., and his brother, Larry, were more like brothers than cousins.
