Listen "The Difference Between Optimism, Pessimism and Realism"

Episode Synopsis

Gordon is with his German Shepherd, Snow, this week as he discusses the value of finding the middle ground of realism when solving challenges and assessing situations.
During the week Gordon has tried a new park run, with Snow being the first dog to complete it, and in preparation for his upcoming half marathon has increased the distance he is running.
As an optimist, Gordon recognises the challenges of being either a significant optimist or pessimist when facing a challenge and shares constructive ways in which we can all reach the middle ground, a place of realism.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
The difference between optimism pessimism and the little bit in between realism
Most people fall into the category of optimist or pessimist very few people are realists although lots like to think they are.
It's important to recognise whether you are an optimist or pessimist naturally and then bring the element of realism to it.
It takes a lot of energy as an optimist to talk with a pessimist and this is the same for the pessimist speaking with an optimist. The thought processes and views on life are opposing.
It’s a different point of view, each view is valid but you need to draw the opposing views into the frame of realism - The realistic view.
Look to solve problems in the most efficient way possible
This will enable you to be more grounded when approaching different challenges.
What are the actual issues and how do we resolve them?
Try and ground yourself as much as possible viewing situations and making decisions from the middle ground of realism.

BEST MOMENTS
‘If you are working on things you enjoy you’ll naturally be better and focus on developing those strengths’
‘You need to recognise whether you are a pessimist or optimist and  bring yourself into the middle ground of realism when you approach a situation’
‘You don’t want to be at the extreme ends all the time’
