Episode Synopsis

011: On this week's episode, I had the honor of speaking with President of Franklin & Marshall College, Barbara K. Altmann. A Canadian native, President Altmann attended the university of Toronto for a PhD in Medieval French Literature and Philology. She has a notable career studying the French Middle Ages, with her longest teaching residency being 25 years at the University of Oregon. In her research, she spends a great deal of time with 600-year-old manuscripts, reading and analyzing poetry from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. After a long teaching career, she became provost at Bucknell University before coming to F&M as president in 2018. She is the mother of two sons.

In our conversation, we dive into President Altmann's journey through the many twists and turns in her education and career. She shares the importance of bringing humility into your leadership, and in incorporating joy into any difficult job or task. We also get into the challenges facing higher education today, and how young people can use their skills to be adaptable and tackle the issues of our world.

If you are a current student, soon to be graduate, or alumn at F&M or any other college, or even have people in your life in the education system, I am sure you will benefit from President Altmann's wisdom.
