Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is zombie.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, zombie is a noun.

Zombie has six meanings. Firstly it is a corpse revived by supernatural means. Secondly, in popular fiction, it is a person or reanimated corpse that has become a creature incapable of rational thought, which feeds on animal flesh. Thirdly it is a person who is or appears unresponsive, lifeless or apathetic to their surroundings. Fourthly, in philosophy, it is a hypothetical being that responds to stimulus as a human would but does not experience consciousness. Fifthly it is a computer controlled by someone without the owner's knowledge, usually with the purpose of sending spam or other illegal or illicit activities. Lastly it is a cocktail consisting of several kinds of rum, liqueur and fruit juice.

An example of the word zombie used in a sentence would be:

She revived her husband using witchcraft, turning him into a zombie.

It is said that a zombie bite will turn you into a zombie, so we tried to stay as far away as possible.

You're being a zombie right now, pay attention!

A philosophical zombie is used to discuss issues relating to consciousness.

Someone hacked into their computer and used it as a zombie.

Or, My favourite drink is a zombie, it's so tasty.
