Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is wrinkle.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, wrinkle is a noun.

Wrinkle has three meanings. Firstly it is a slight line or fold in something. Secondly it is a minor difficulty. Lastly it is a clever innovation, or useful piece of information or advice.

An example of wrinkle used as a noun in a sentence would be:

Her dress was perfectly smooth, not a wrinkle in sight.

The increasing heat might cause the barrels to explode and put a wrinkle in our plan.

Or, I gave them a wrinkle but they'll need to figure out the rest on their own.

Wrinkle can also be used as a verb, with two meanings. Firstly it is to make or cause slight lines or folds in something. Secondly it is to cause wrinkles to appear on the face through facial movement.

An example of wrinkle used as a verb in a sentence would be:

He was very careful with the poster to make sure that he didn't wrinkle it.

Or, I tend to wrinkle my brow when I am stressed.

Antonyms: smoothness, evenness, flatness, iron, straighten.
