Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is receipt.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, receipt is a noun.

Receipt has four meanings. Firstly it is the action of receiving something or the fact of its being received. Secondly it is a written or printed statement acknowledging payment for something or receiving of goods. Thirdly it is an amount of money received during a particular period by an organisation or business. Lastly, informally, it is proof or evidence of something.

An example of the word receipt used as a noun in a sentence would be:

The result of the application will come within a week of receipt of the forms.

You can't return the product without the receipt of purchase.

She was happy that the receipt for the day showed that the event was profitable.

Or, He tried to lie but they had a receipt; there was a recording of what he said.

Receipt can also be used as a verb, meaning to mark something as paid.

An example of merit used as a verb in a sentence would be:

Can you receipt this for me so I can have evidence of the transaction?

Or, Let's receipt this and give them the bill.

Synonyms: receiving, acceptance, voucher, profits, gains.

Antonyms: refusal, dismissal, denial, loss, disproof.]
