Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is pitcher.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, pitcher is a noun.

Pitcher has four meanings. Firstly it is a large jug of water, or the contents of a large jug. Secondly it is broken pottery crushed and reused. Thirdly it is the modified leaf of a pitcher plant. Lastly, in baseball, it is the player who throws the ball to the batter.

An example of pitcher used in a sentence would be:

He was so thirsty that he drank the whole pitcher of water by himself.

I turned my clay mug into pitcher and recycled it to make a bowl.

Pitcher plants have modified leaves, known as a pitcher, which is designed to trap prey.

Or, she was a great pitcher, not many batters could hit any ball she threw.
