Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is phantom.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, phantom is a noun.

Phantom has four meanings. Firstly it is another name for a ghost. Secondly it is a figment off the imagination. Thirdly it is something that is not real or illusory. Lastly it is a financial arrangement or transaction invented for fraudulent purposes.

An example of phantom used in a sentence would be:

He was sure that he was being haunted by a phantom.

It was important for her to ignore the phantom in her mind and come back to reality.

They created a phantom degree from a non existent university to falsely claim that they were doctors of science.

Or, A phantom account was used to steal millions of pounds.

Synonyms: phantasm, apparition, spectre, delusion, illusion.
