Today let's learn a new word, heterogeneous!

Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is heterogeneous.

Heterogeneous is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.

Heterogeneous has three definitions. Firstly it describes things as being diverse in character or content. Secondly, in chemistry, it describes things as of or denoting a process involving substances in different phases. Lastly, in maths, it describes things as not being able to be compared due to being of different kinds, degrees, or dimensions.

An example of the word heterogeneous used as an adjective in a sentence would be:

She has a large and heterogeneous collection of pretty rocks that she found over the years.

A heterogeneous reaction is a chemical reaction in which the reactants are components of different phases, for example solid and gas.

Or, Two numbers are heterogeneous if their prime factors are distinct.


Synonyms: diverse, miscellaneous, assorted, divergent, myriad.


Antonyms: homogeneous, consistent, indistinguishable, related, matching.
