Today’s word of the day is final.
Final is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.
Final has three meanings. Firstly it describes something as coming at the end of a series. Secondly it describes something as being reached or designed to be reached as the outcome of a process or a series of actions and events. Lastly it describes something as allowing no further doubt or dispute.
An example of the word final used as an adjective in a sentence would be:
This is your final warning, you'll be kicked out if you make another mistake.
The final sum after adding everything together is around £300.
Or, Her decision to enter the competition is final, there's no stopping her now.
Final can also be used as a noun with four meanings. Firstly it is the last game in a tournament or competition. Secondly it is a series of games that make up the final stage of a tournament or competition. Thirdly it is a series of examinations at the end of a degree course. Lastly it is the ending approach of an aircraft to the runway it intends to land on.
An example of the word final used as a noun in a sentence would be:
We're coming up to the final, this game will determine the winner of the tournament.
After an intense week of competition, four teams have made it through to the final next week.
She is very nervous about her science final, but I think she will do very well.
Or, The pilot steered the plane towards the runway and began the final.

Antonyms: first, inaugural, beginning, provisional, qualifier.
