Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is evil.

Evil is a descriptive word therefore it is an adjective.

Evil has four meanings. Firstly it describes something as being profoundly immoral and wicked. Secondly it describes something as embodying or associated with the forces of the devil. Thirdly it describes something as being harmful or tending to harm. Lastly it describes something as being extremely unpleasant.

An example of the word evil used as an adjective in a sentence would be:

It's just evil the way some people treat other human beings.

This seems like an evil place, this must be where the demons live.

The idea that media such as TV or video games has an evil effect on children has been debunked many times.

Or, There was an evil smell coming from the room.

Evil can also be used as a noun, with three meanings. Firstly it is the name of profound immorality and wickedness. Secondly it is the name of a manifestation of profound immorality and wickedness. Lastly it is the name of something that is harmful or undesirable.

An example of evil used as a noun in a sentence would be:

The castle is home to evil, we shouldn't be here.

He was facing severe repercussions for the evil he committed.

Or, The evil that her words inspired was a danger to the world.

Synonyms: wicked, sin, vile, abomination, suffering.

Antonyms: good, virtuous, blessing, hero, noble.
