Today’s word of the day is dissident.
Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an idea or concept. Therefore, dissident is a noun.
A dissident is a person who opposes official policy. It is usually used when someone is opposing an authoritarian state.
An example of dissident used as a noun in a sentence would be:
They described him as a dissident who has no respect for the law.
Or, The unjust ruling of the President forced her to become a dissident and declare her disapproval.
Dissident can also be used as an adjective, describing someone or something as being in opposition to official policy.
An example of dissident used as an adjective in a sentence would be:
She called him a dissident fool just because he didn't want to play with the group.
Or, Rebellion is widely supported by dissident factions among the people.
Synonyms: objector, protester, freethinker, opposing, disagreeing
Antonyms: conformist, follower, patriot, compliant, obedient
