Today’s word of the day is contrition.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, contrition is a noun.

Contrition has two meanings. Firstly it is the state of feeling remorseful and apologetic. Secondly, in Roman Catholicism, it is the repentance of past sins during or after confession.

An example of the word contrition used in a sentence would be:

He showed contrition for his mistake by buying dinner for everyone.

Or, She offered prayers of contrition after confessing her sins.

Synonyms: remorse, repentance, penitence, sorrow, guilt

Antonyms: relentlessness, happiness, hurtfulness, joy, satisfaction
