Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is conflict.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, conflict is a noun.

Conflict has four meanings. Firstly it is a serious disagreement or argument. Secondly it is a prolonged fight using weapons, such as war. Thirdly it is a mental struggle between opposing or clashing feelings or needs. Lastly it is a serious incompatibility between two or more opinions, principles, or interests.

An example of conflict used as a noun in a sentence would be:

Their different opinions led to a conflict about what direction they should take.

The years long conflict between the two countries was finally coming to an end and peace was close.

She felt an internal conflict when asked to choose between the two tops.

Or, His work life and home life were at conflict with eachother.

Conflict can also be used as a verb, meaning to be incompatible or clash.

An example of conflict used as a verb would be:

Their interests sometimes conflict so they work to find compromises.

Synonyms: clash, fight, disagree, quarrel, dispute.

Antonyms: agreement, peace, harmony, appease, mediate.
