Today let's learn a new word, animation!

Hi and welcome to Let’s Word Up! Each day we post a word of the day to help you improve your English language skills.

Today’s word of the day is animation.

Nouns are words that we use to name things. It can be a person, a place, a thing, an
idea or concept. Therefore, animation is a noun.

Animation has three meanings. Firstly it is the state of being full of life, vigour or liveliness. Secondly it is the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the pictures are shown in sequence. Lastly it is the manipulation of electronic images using a computer in order to create moving images.

An example of animation used in a sentence would be:

They seemed to be bored at first but soon they appeared to be engaging with animation.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a film that was made entirely with stop motion animation.

Or, The first feature length CGI animation ever released was Toy Story in 1995.


Synonyms: enthusiasm, spirit, passion, cartoon, anime.

Antonyms: lethargy, inertia, fatigue, sloth, passivity.
