In 1951, during Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist crusades, the Supreme Court supported such actions by affirming the convictions of those who attempted to form a Communist Party in the U.S. It was only in the 1960s that the Court issued decisions protecting political activists and the freedom of the press.
