Listen "53 - Presence"
Episode Synopsis
Kirk Reflections 22nd October 2023.
Rev. Erick du Toit brings today's reflection from Kirkliston Parish Church, Scotland.
THE GIFT OF PRESENCE
‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’(Exodus 33: 14)
I overheard a Minister reflect on the state of the world and how depleted everyone seems. And then he said something that stuck with me:“People aren’t tired. They’re uninspired.”That got me thinking. My leadership: does it inspire? Do our members inspire others to live more vibrantly, freely, and creatively? Can we honestly say that our behaviour inspires other to follow Jesus? Or do we also look tired, worn out and hopeless…This is of course something worth pondering.
In a society that’s ALWAYS busy, do I shine rest? The rest I find in the assurance that I am saved. Now you're thinking: ‘Yet, another thing to add to my to-do-list.’
That’s not the promise we get in the Exodus passage. Not at all. Knowing that God’s presence is with us, should give us a sense of peace. Rest, even. That’s the point of the Gospel. We don’t have to be tired all the time, because by Christ and through Christ we’ve attained the ultimate rest: Knowing Jesus as our LORD and Saviour.Wow. That truth should help me to inspire others through bearing the fruit of the Spirit.
