Pilates was first started in the 20th century, by a man called Joseph Pilates. This form of exercise was called Contrology. Pilates is a full-body workout that incorporates the use of springs and bodyweight exercises to emphasize the control of the core, and proper breathing while ensuring correct spinal and pelvic alignment. Pilates is designed to develop and strengthen stabilizer muscles that all support the skeletal system, specifically the spine, which we can only imagine ultimately improves posture.
In Pilates, your pelvis is referred to as your powerhouse. Pilates teaches you to use your powerhouse when you are taking part in daily activities. The muscles are found in your pelvic floor up to the muscles under your rib cage.
Pilates is typically used along with other methods of exercise. Pilates can be used as the base of any training or sport. The best thing about Pilates is that it can be customized to suit any individual regardless of their needs and fitness levels.
