Episode Synopsis

"What’s your guiding force?

Unfortunately, we cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond to it.

In this podcast episode, I sat down with my friend from law school Jessica Hubbard who is now the CEO of Casa Youth Shelter. Unbeknownst to me, she started this work to “right the wrongs of [her] past.” Hubbard shares vulnerably about her experience being groomed by a “close family friend” from ages 11-18.

While this is clearly wrong, as a child you simply don’t know any better.

She explains how this relationship “didn’t feel like it was wrong” because it was someone that she felt comfortable around as he was so close to the family.

She understands first-hand the importance of being a voice for children, and more specifically youth, who are going through a challenging time and supports them on their healing journey. “You are not the worst thing that’s ever happened to you,” she shares optimistically.

This non-profit supports:
Runaway Youth
Throwaway Youth
Traffic Youth
Youth in Crisis

With the goal of getting the youth to feel SAFE and Stable, the shelter takes in those who have no where else to go and sets them up with a personalized care plan. Based in Los Alamitos, California, this facility is so much more than that. The Casa Youth Shelter is a home. Here, youths have access to a clean bed, their own bedroom, 3 nutritious meals, and more.

The shelter began back in 1978 by a woman named Myldred E. Jones, who recognized the need to support youth. At that time, this was the first-ever youth shelter as well as a youth crisis call line. Currently, the shelter operates 24/7 with 42 staff members and volunteers.
