3:6 (ESV): “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

This line is repeated at the end of every one of these mini-epistles to the seven churches. Just as these churches were commanded to learn what God would say to all the other churches in this book, we, Christians today, ought to learn from what was send to them as well.

3:10 (ESV): Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.

This seems to be a word about the final judgment (hence, “the whole world”). It echoes of 1:7, which says, “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him”.

3:19 (ESV): Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

The original context of this verse is for Christians in the Church. Of course, there is some extent a transferability to calling all people to hear Jesus’ voice and respond to him. However, this verse must be understood as it was originally intended. While this book contains oracles of the Final Judgment, as I demonstrated it does in verse 10. Revelation also contains moments of disciplinary action by God the Father to Christians. God disciplining Christians is not a final judgment, it’s not the end of the world, it’s a work of sanctification.

3:5, 12, 21 (ESV): “The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess … I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. … I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.”

Every call to overcome sin, death, and the Devil in this life is promised with the reward of eternal life and ruling with Jesus forever. The call and promise are both given by Jesus. This is why we must persevere, or, as it says in this book, “patiently endure,” to the end!
