Episode Synopsis

Mound City Blue Blowers: (with Eddie Lang) Arkansas Blues, Deep Second Street Blues, The Goofus Five: Everybody Loves My Baby, I Ain't Got Nobody To Love (Billy Jones, Voc.), Oh Mabel, Them Ramblin' Blues, Cliff Edwards: Fascinatin' Rhythm, Bessie Smith: Follow the Deal On Down, Sinful Blues, MCBB: Tiger Rag, Red Hot, The Little Ramblers (Rollini): Those Panama Mamas, Prince of Wails, Jamaica Jazzers (C. WIlliams, T. Waller): You Don't Know My Mind Blues.Bessie Smith played the kazoo. Cliff Edwards and Red McKenzie vocals fit the kazoo paradigm. Which includes virtuoso accompaniment by Eddie Lang. Edwards plays a hot ukulele. The Ramblers included comic novelty sounds from drummer vocalist Stan King. With Rollini the bass sax is a big kazoo. Rollini also played second kazoo behind King. Red Nichols on the Welk show in the 50’s still carried a bass sax. In Rollini you have a bass sax claiming lead status in a quintet. In rock star Bobby Davis you have fun alto altitude and his comic clarinet blowing much like Redman’s in the Tio, Jr. manner. The goofus of Rollini invites us downstairs to see the model train in the basement. Bill Moore is the lead voice like Groucho with his brothers. But where did all this lead? Think of the spectacular Mills Brothers. They started with a kazoo and then Harry sang the trumpet part, Donald the trombone. What magic they made in their scat singing as in Nobody’s Sweetheart Now and is still there to be developed. And if we are listing the top male jazz singers who is better technically than Donald and Harry. Not close. So that is where Stan King, Red McKenzie and Cliff Edwards lead us and Adrian Rollini’s legacy is in John Mills, Jr. basso and Eddie Lang’s legacy in John Jr.’s guitar. Hosted on Acast.
