India’s debt market, is still nascent. It has the promise of enormous growth if the various barriers constraining it are eventually addressed. This requires a multi-pronged approach that includes policy reforms, developing the infrastructure, incentivising participation from domestic and foreign investors and, most importantly, educating them on how it works and why it is important from a portfolio diversifying perspective. Going forward, the market for debt must be wide and deep as it should be a vital source of capital and, consequently, economic growth.
