On this date in 1851, African American abolitionist and women's rights activist Sojourner Truth attended the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, where she delivered an impromptu speech that became known as Ain't I a Woman? Given the current visible violence on human beings who are Black, which is but a highlighted fraction of centuries of ongoing genocidal illness, my soul urges me to share this small book with you now. Father to Son: Ode to Black Boys was born, like Sojourner's speech, as an impromptu keynote speech as a last minute replacement for our precious poet, Nikki Giovanni, at a 2001 statewide conference on the African American male, organized and hosted by the African American Advisory Council, of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
