Episode Synopsis

We live from the West Side this week, surrounded by our Peoples in Ghana and getting learnings on Motherhood. What we not fuxing with today is denying the impact that tongues of fire have on our children. I feel very privileged to be able to experience this journey with my daughter, and recognize that it is my own inner work regarding "mothering" myself that allows me to do so. That is where we begin today, an examination of that word as used by Audre Lorde who posits that the Black Woman must mother herself before she has the capacity to mother any one else - this includes mothering other Black Women (and don't we need it!). Query: How does a Black Woman who has mothered herself show up for her children? In reverse, how does a Black Woman who has not mothered herself show up? This is when we turn to the Queen for guidance. In Chapter 8 of Sisters of the Yam, Tongues of Fire: Learning Critical Affirmation, bell hooks requires us to truthfully revisit the harsh critiques we received as "love" from our mothers, which ultimately was verbally abusive, but dressed as a caring gesture - a "necessity" to set us on the right path. I rebuke this method of "love" as it is not loving towards our children, and does not provide them a soft-space to land, thus it MUST be unlearned. In a world that is already hostile towards our Blackness, tongues of fire will be met everywhere we go. Let's create gentle voices that match our open arms so our babies always know the places they can return home to.REFERENCES IN TODAY'S EPISODEAudre Lorde, Sister Outsider, Eye to Eye: Black Women, Hatred, and Angerbell hooks, Sisters of the Yam, Tongues of Fire: Learning Critical AffirmationIf you are an Uppity Black Woman, ready to say: I.Can't.Fux.With.You!
