The traditional American solution to poverty alleviation has been to solve problems through material and financial means. While this method does met someone's need, it can often create more and more dependency on people and programs and deepens the cycle of poverty.
Jesus didn't solve problems materially alone... He transformed hearts and that's what changed a person's life. If we really want to end poverty, the people we serve have to be an active participant in the solution.
