The Balinese new year begins with A Day of Silence. But it is preceded by a night of noise, disruption, and chaos – a parade of evil demons that counters the day of peace and reflection. These grotesque effigies, called Ogoh-Ogoh, come to life and are animated in the dark of night accompanied by screaming, yelling, and the clashing of gamelan instruments.
