The industry is usually divided between upstream and downstream activities. The exploration, production, and transportation of crude oil and gas to the place of transformation into final products (i.e., refineries) are known as upstream while activities deal with the processing of crude oil in refineries, the distribution and the marketing activities of all the oil-derived products are known as downstream.
