Listen "Running, Hiding and Healing from Trauma"
Episode Synopsis
Ep. 82 Running or hiding from a memory or past trauma is often necessary until you are mentally and emotionally equipped to face it. Many times, it’s a necessary coping strategy to protect yourself along your journey to recovery. In this episode, Kelly Marie discusses moving from a hiding place into a healing space.
It’s been 10 years since Kelly Marie’s last suicide attempt. This is the first time she’s forgotten the anniversary. August and the beginning of September are usually emotionally sensitive for her but this year has not had the same impact.

Have you heard of flight or fight?
According to Healthine.com: The fight-flight-freeze response is your body’s natural reaction to danger. It happens through hormonal and physiological changes that allow you to act quickly so you can protect yourself. The fight-flight-freeze response is a type of stress response that helps you react to perceived threats, like an oncoming car or a growling dog. It’s a survival instinct that our ancient ancestors developed many years ago.
What’s also common is forced remembrance. Making you or someone else remember a time they would otherwise forget. Kelly Marie practiced forced remembrance in order to remain on an active healing path. This may not be the healthiest practice and is one that she is no longer pushing herself to participate in.
By offering yourself grace, patience and kindness while you build emotional safety you are creating an internal safe space to process, grow and heal. If you have already reached the active healing milestone, hold space for folks doing their best to get there. Together we can all #bethelight.
