We want to achieve certain goals: be a certain weight, complete a 5k, complete a Spartan race, whatever they may be... but what gets in the way of us accomplishing them?It could be a number of things: our inability to pass on dessert, us taking the out when our training gets hard, etc. What will HELP us reach our goals is to say YES to short term pain (or "discomfort") in order to achieve our goals. Saying no to yourself temporarily or in the moment, in order to accomplish something we feel is greater.
