The key reason young associates fail is not a lack of intelligence. The reason is a failure to understand their role. So, what is the role? The role is to allow themselves to be smart und think for themselves. Interestingly enough, this is hard from many coming out of University where their only role was to suck up knowledge, but not necessarily make up their mind about imperfect data. 
The same goes for writing a CV and a cover letter. Your role is not to make your life flawless. Your role is to allow yourself to craft a convincing story.
