Listen "Episode 187 with Paul Maffetone, Founder of Michael’s HOPE and NoFo Rustik Flags"
Episode Synopsis
A quick note before we begin: this episode contains discussion of substance abuse, addiction, and loss, which may be difficult for some listeners.Today on the podcast, we’re joined by Paul Maffetone, founder of Michael’s HOPE, a nonprofit born from loss and dedicated to saving lives through education, awareness, and compassion.A lifelong resident of Laurel, Paul grew up in a close-knit family that valued hard work and community. When his older brother Michael died of a heroin overdose, Paul turned grief into action, confronting substance abuse on the North Fork and helping others find a way out. His work has opened space for honest dialogue around addiction and loss, conversations that, as Paul reminds us, need to keep happening in every community.Through Michael’s HOPE, he’s trained residents in the use of Narcan, broken down stigma, and brought his message from the local level to the halls of Albany. We also talk about how his craft at NoFo Rustik Flags, creating handcrafted wooden flags, has become a symbol of perseverance, hope, and remembrance.
