“The Lodger” was the audition show for Suspense, and aired on July 22, 1940, two years before Suspense went into production, became a series, and aired its first weekly episode in June of 1942.
Based on the Jack the Ripper murders, this story depicts a mysterious zealot who who rents a room from a working class London couple. Could this stranger be the murderous figure known as the Avenger?
Herbert Marshall portrayed the mysterious lodger, and co-starring with him were Edmund Gwenn and character actress Lurene Tuttle as the rooming-house keepers who start to suspect that their new boarder might be the notorious Jack-the-Ripper.
