Episode Synopsis

Host(s): Geoffrey Ax and Cian Hanlon Hi, I am GeoffreyAnd I am Cian Today we are talking with Tina Lowe, UCD Campus Accessibility Officer".You are very welcome to the podcast Tina. 1.     Can you tell us a little about yourself to begin? 2.     What designs, out in the world, end up creating inequality? 3.     As someone with visual impairment, is dealing with design inequality a daily experience for you?4.     How accessible is the University campus?5.     One of the principles we talk about in this class is that “universal access” is a “universal requirement” for all designs. But how can we raise awareness of accessible design, when the barriers people encounter are invisible to the majority?6.     In a recent letter to the Irish Times (Feb 12, 2022) Susan Dennehy, whose teenage daughter is a wheelchair user, concludes that “the charitable model of disability [must] be replaced by rights-based model”. Is that the solution? How can we make things better?Other questions?Well, we’ll wrap up there.Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences today.AcknowledgementsMusic(EzaOne - Supernova: youtu.be/xZDYu5azS-c)Title: Eza One - SupernovaArtist: Argofox (record label)Source: “https://soundcloud.com/argofox/ezaone-supernova”License: “CC BY”Argofox is a record label releasing royalty free music for creators to use in monetized videos and streams in exchange for credit.Cover Art Title: The Driver - Humanscale Blueprint - Space Envelope for a Compact AutomobileArtist: Graphic design by Allen Higgins Source: fileLicense: CC BY-NC-SA 4.0The graphic is under Fair Use and adapted from “Space Envelope for a Compact Automobile” from Humanscale 7/8/9 booklet by Niels Diffrient, Alvin R.
