Before his Spiderman trilogy and Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Sam Raimi introduced the world to a superhero of his own making in the 1990 classic Darkman. We discuss Raimi’s refreshingly bold visual style, exhilarating action sequences that demonstrate how much can be accomplished with so little, and Raimi’s own superpower of seamlessly blending action, horror and goofiness. Liam Neeson is brilliant as the complex and conflicted Darkman, whose quest for vengeance propels a story that is both engrossing and unexpected. This forgotten gem is a reminder of the joy of superhero films …as well as a cautionary tale to never get between Liam Neeson and his pink elephant toy.
