Today I’m featuring the story of a man and a donkey who became Sta. Clara’s legend. Arnaldo y Perico, a story of admiration and love.
Last year when I met Arnaldo in Cuba, he told me over una tacita de café about Perico, Sta. Clara’s famous burro. Adding, he had written a book about Perico. Immediately, I fell in love with Perico and the idea of bringing these cuentos - stories, to people living in other parts of the world.
You see, many stories disappear en el Olvido – in forgetfulness, a place where old things are held in stasis. Stories similar to Perico’s vanished from our collective memories as our families dealt with the imminent needs of coping in exile. I was one of those children who didn’t learn about Perico.
But, six months later, I translated and published the book, so Arnaldo and I could re-introduce Perico to you and the world, and this year, we even launched the audio-book in Spanish.
