Creativity only cares about being creative. If you’re like me and lose the joy of creating when you focus on strategic accomplishments in some competitive pinnacle of success—acclaim or riches or admiration— then maybe you are more gardener than architect. It took me most of my life to realize that my work thrives in a field of wildflower creativity, following my impulses to plant seemingly random seeds, to scatter ideas like dandelion puffs and wander among grasses, where there is no path. I’m not famous or rich and most likely you’ve never heard of me, but if you come across my work, my paintings, my writings, my designs, and my footprint in the world, I hope they would give you pleasure. Accidental, surprising delight. A review of one of my plays once said it was like opening a closet, and discovering a jazz band playing there. You can have your skyscraper reputation and meteoric fame.
